We are seeking an experienced Staff Electrical Engineer who will play a pivotal role in developing advanced analog and digital circuits for our cutting-edge DNA sequencing instruments. This is an incredible opportunity for someone who is passionate about high performance electronics for scientific instrument. We are looking for candidates with a solid background in sensor, motion/thermal control, and power convertor. Experience with EMC and safety compliance certification is a must. This role will report to Director of Electrical Engineering and will be a San Diego based role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Translate user needs into technical spec
  • Perform analog, power and digital circuit designs a wide range of applications, including self-diagnostics
  • Integrate OTS PSUs into smart power monitor and control solution
  • Create schematics and layouts for PCBAs for various distributed subsystems
  • Lead prototype build, integration, and qualification
  • Manage Interdisciplinary troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Design and build automatic test fixtures
  • Contribute to overall system architecture and verification
  • Drive electronic design reviews and technical presentations
  • Responsible for instrument EMC and electrical safety compliance
  • Generate detailed technical documents and work instructions
  • Work with supply chain and manufacturing on production transfer activities

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or related technical disciplines
  • 8+ years of direct experience in developing and testing of relevant electronic products, covering subsystems such as:
    1. Off the shelf power module
    2. RFID module
    3. A/D and D/A converter
    4. Embedded controller
    5. SPI, I2C and CAN bus
    6. Thermal control using TEC device
    7. Stepper/BLDC motor driver
  • Advanced experience in schematic and layout design with Altium (preferred)
  • Solid understanding of EMC and safety compliance requirements and capable of driving technical solutions for compliance certification
  • Related experience in microcontroller programming
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills in order to influence good electrical, FW, and systems design practices
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, interdisciplinary environment and quickly adjust to rapidly evolving technology and priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of clearly explaining technical issues, ideas, and project status to peers and management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Moves lab equipment weighing up to 20 pounds in lab environment

  • Up to 10% domestically or as needed

Job Type:

  • Exempt/Full-time

Base Compensation Pay Range:

  • $126,000 - $165,000


In addition to base compensation noted above, you will be eligible for stock options, discretionary annual bonus, no cost health insurance plans, 401k with company match, and flexible paid time off.
