Element Biosciences is a multi-disciplinary startup focused on innovating genetic analysis tools for the research and clinical markets. The Company's technology will broaden the end user experience through improved data quality and simplified workflows to benefit discoveries and diagnosis in healthcare. The Systems Integration group is seeking a Research Associate to assist with ongoing R&D efforts testing product readiness for market.  The Research Associate will work under the direction of scientists to run and maintain our instruments and assist in the preparation of reagents. With mentoring, the candidate will be able to develop and optimize methods/techniques for testing and the evaluation of cutting-edge genomics technologies. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Prepare reagents, buffers, and mixes according to standard protocols
  • Meticulously record and organize data from laboratory activities
  • Perform routine testing of system capabilities
  • Help maintain instrument fleet through routine maintenance and improvement of processes
  • Work closely with lead scientists to meet deliverable and timeline goals
  • Use laboratory equipment as needed (e.g. microscopes, sequencers, flow cytometers)

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in biology, molecular or cell biology, biochemistry, biological physics, bio-engineering, chemical engineering or equivalent field of study. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • 0-2+ years of experience
  • Experience in internships, individual contributor in a research laboratory, or industry is preferred
  • Experience with general biology and chemistry laboratory techniques (e.g., dilutions, reaction formulation, pipetting)
  • Experience running complex laboratory equipment

Required Skills and Abilities

  • High attention to detail with diligent record and note keeping 
  • Be familiar with common molecular biology laboratory techniques such as buffer dilution, pipetting and enzyme handling best practices
  • Understanding of best practices for DNA and enzyme handling
  • Familiarity with NGS and its common applications
  • Ability to perform standard calculations in chemistry, molarity, mass, densities and weights
  •  Basic algebraic, statistical and mathematical skills and knowledge of general chemistry and molecular biology
  • Advanced statistical analysis particularly the use of statistical software tools (JMP, R, Matlab)
  • Basic programming skills
  • Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Curiosity driven pursuit of independent research projects 
  • Ability to communicate results clearly to peers and management
  • Ability to interface and communicate effectively with multiple different teams (e.g., engineering, operations, protein engineering)
