Element Biosciences is a multi-disciplinary startup focused on innovating genetic analysis tools for the research and clinical markets. The Company's technology will broaden the end user experience through improved data quality and simplified workflows to benefit discoveries and diagnosis in healthcare. We are seeking a highly motivated Microfluidics Consumables engineer to design and develop novel consumables and microfluidic devices in our Chemistry & Consumables Development team. The engineer will be responsible for microfabrication and microfluidics design, development, testing, product transfer activities, and will play an important role in vendor qualifications, specification development, stability studies, QC and production documentation. The role is a highly cross-functional role across multiple departments and technical disciplines and the engineer will be a part of a highly energetic and collaborative team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test novel microfluidic consumables for next generation sequencing and biological applications
  • Develop consumables to test new surface chemistry and functionalization methods
  • Optimize designs to improve downstream assay performance
  • Collaborate with engineering groups to ensure consumable design tolerances are compatible with tooling
  • Design, prioritize, and execute experiments to test assays and DNA amplification methods on novel consumables and microfluidic devices
  • Develop and execute experimental plans, both independently and in small teams, to improve biochemistry on consumables
  • Interact closely with researchers and engineers in other teams to find comprehensive solutions
  • Participate in intellectual property creation
  • Implement and maintain process workflows and good work practices
  • Write SOPs and work instructions
  • Collaborate closely with research teams and ops/manufacturing teams as products evolve
  • Analyze data, record and present results

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in mechanical, materials, chemical, bioengineering or a related discipline
  • 2 – 4 years in related industry such as genetics, genomics, molecular diagnostics, NGS, and microfluidic device development or an equivalent combination of experience and education, is desired
  • Experience in device fabrication, microfluidics design, microfabrication, wafer-level processes, and metrology techniques is preferred
  • Hands-on lab experience in genetic assays and microdevice fabrication is a plus

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of semiconductor and MEMS processes, lithography, etching, and wafer bonding
  • Knowledge of microfluidics and biosensors
  • Knowledge of product development cycle
  • Comfortable working with device prototypes and on complex and interdisciplinary engineering problems
  • Demonstrated success working in a fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities and rapidly changing priorities
  • Good organizational skills, can-do attitude, ambitious, and flexible
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to be a good team player and work in a fast-paced research environment
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
