The Manufacturing Chemist is responsible for supporting the manufacturing and QC of reagent consumables for Element Biosciences. This will include synthesis and purification of key intermediates; use and maintenance of analytical instruments; as well as supporting new product introduction and continuous improvement initiatives. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Support manufacture of Element reagent consumables:

  • Perform multi-step synthesis of complex organic molecules
  • Analyze and purify complex organic molecules via HPLC and IEX
  • Conduct internal Quality Control procedures for intermediates and finished goods
  • Maintain and troubleshoot chromatography systems
  • Perform work order processing to complete products to inventory
  • Support cross-functional teams/projects related to: Scale-up, New Product Introduction, Continuous Improvement, Product Transfer, Product Sustaining, Product Development, CAPA activities, Validation studies, etc
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other scientists, engineers, and manufacturing personnel to suggest, evaluate, and implement above initiatives, ensuring alignment with Quality, Regulatory, and Business objectives
  • Use knowledge of manufacturing processes to identify efficiencies and troubleshoot issues
  • Perform data collection and analysis, Interpreting and responding to quality data
  • Understand workflow and create/review Standard Operating Procedures
  • Provide training and support to junior members manufacturing team

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to follow established protocol in the production of complex organic molecules
  • Knowledge of organic chemistry, process chemistry, and process engineering are desirable
  • Fast learner and experience training others on the new process
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as on teams
  • System level testing and troubleshooting experience
  • Start Up culture experience – comfortable in working with ambiguity and at a fast pace.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator – experience in working closely with process development engineers
  • Basic understanding of equipment upkeep, calibration and maintenance
  • Good computer skills and comfort in using computers for all aspects of MFG, experience with excel and word, Confluence, web based or similar programs
  • Working knowledge of MRP and ERP system
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant science (biology, biochemistry, chemistry) with specialization in synthetic or analytical chemistry preferred
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered
  • 3+ years relevant experience in consumable manufacturing, with hands on experience with organic synthesis and small molecule purification
  • Proficiency with chromatographic tools such as GE AKTA and Agilent HPLC systems
  • Experience with SOPs, BRs, WIs
